Bad Boys....featuring Sean Penn

So I rented this movie called Bad Boys. No it isn't the one with will smith, where they take down all the drug lords in Miami. This is an older movie directed by Rick Rosenthal. The movie takes place mostly in a jail for kids. There are all types of kids in this jail, whites, Jews, blacks, and Latinos. The thing that I thought about after watching this movie. Is that all the different types of ethnicity's in the jail all were portrayed in basically the same manner. I mean of coarse they make some of the characters to seem much worse then others, but none of the characters were made look good. I liked the fact that all of the characters were portrayed this way. Can you think of any other movies where all different races are portrayed in the same fashion?

  3. In the The Passion of the Christ, Barabbas was given bad teeth. Usually in movies, the villains are made to look like snaggle tooths. The only reason why Judas was given a good smile is because they didn't know he was a back stabber.

  4. Usually it's the case that race is used as a marker--shorthand--for audiences to orient themselves. Here, it sounds like prison is the great equalizer--other aspects like the power relationship w/ the guards and such come into greater focus. Am I remembering right--does Penn put a six-pack of soda in a pillowcase and just attack somebody in this film? It's been a long long time...
